Petition to Eliminate Unfair Fees to Indie Authors at Draft2Digital

Hi friends,

This goes out to indie authors, and those who love us!

SIGN THE PETITION: Eliminate Unfair Draft2Digital Fees for Indie Authors.

D2D is hitting indies with more & more fees. If we keep allowing it, it won't stop! Help end this. This petition goes to Kris Austin, CEO of D2D.

Draft2Digital, once a viable alternative to Amazon, is now charging indie authors a "maintenance fee" if they don't sell $100 worth of books a year (that's net, after commission to D2D and the retailer). It's well known statistically that most indie books sell on average a hundred copies in their lifetimes. Authors get only a small royalty averaging $1-2 per book sold, as we can't price our books out of the market - eBooks are generally priced for sale between 2.99 and 4.99, unless the author is among the 10% who are very well known, thus can charge more.

Double whammy! D2D is also now charging $20 for new accounts, ostensibly for quality control. This targets legitimate authors who are struggling to make a living. It's already a sticky situation as D2D started charging authors to deposit their earnings in Paypal a few months ago. Technically it's against Paypal policy, but they found a loophole.

This company already does not allow changes to print books, except once every 3 months, imposing a $25 fee otherwise. Other indie platforms permit changes to print books at any time for no charge. There are complaints of poor quality printing from some D2D authors, especially those using images.

Draft2Digital does nothing to earn these increasing fees. They don't help authors promote, an essential these days, or support the indie author community. Instead, they penalize indies, which is more financially advantageous to the company, and support only authors who are bringing in more money.

Also recently, they began punishing authors who want to sell their books under $2.99, by taking a hefty 60% commission. Pretty hard to make $100 net a year like that. This effectively targets writers of short fiction who would traditionally sell these works for .99 - 1.99, but are now forced to charge readers more to avoid the financial penalty - resulting in loss of sales. Readers have access to an overwhelming number of freeloads (free books) these days and aren't likely to pay $2.99 for a short story.

D2D doesn't even do their own distribution -  they use IngramSpark to distribute books, as do most self-publishing platforms. Any author can join Ingram for free and get automatic distribution to the same places and more (the site can be glitchy and customer service is practically non-existent unless you pay $25 for it, but at least it's free to upload & distribute your books. Recently they even removed an updating fee, so that's a plus).

Draft2Digital has no reason to impose any of these fees on authors except sheer corporate greed. Help support indie authors, many of whom are living hand-to-mouth and simply can't afford this. These unfair fees keep legitimate writers from selling, and limit the choice for readers, who are missing out on some really great books due to this company's unethical parasitic behavior.
